The level of chaos varies widely, but what’s striking about the Italians is that they’re comfortable with this. They’re good at finding solutions, somehow, somewhere. L’arte di arrangiarsi. The art of managing, getting by. Dualistic because on the one hand, 20 years of abysmal commercial television has given rise to a culture of superficiality, while on the other hand it is an erudite, courtly culture. Italians are interested in beauty, but they care more for external than for internal beauty.
